Bikes Palya – APY Lands Bike Education
Bikes Palya is on the road again delivering our third year of cycling activities to youth across ten remote communities of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. Despite the roads from Alice Springs being a little soggy this time around, School Term 2 is off to an energetic start with long-term projects like the completion of BMX tracks and the building of donated bike fleets for each community coming closer to realisation.
In 2016 our instructors are excited to strengthen and celebrate the inter-community and inter-cultural relationships that can be built around the humble bicycle, during our time on the lands. Adding to the existing focus on community health, school attendance and reducing waste, collaborations with local services have been weaving new activities including adult bike maintenance training workshops and public art installations to celebrate the BMX tracks and of course the fun of riding bicycles.
Bikes Palya could never happen without the huge support of Bike SA members, who’s donations of BMX bikes exceeded our 150 bike target, and our trusty volunteers who helped get them “bush” ready. Also to our generous vehicle sponsor CMV Foundation and local businesses Bicycles Mt Barker, Mash Design and Derivan Paint whose contributions have taken the program further than we could have imagined. Of course this entire three year program would not have been possible without the support of the South Australian government’s Special Community Youth Grant program.
