Perfect weather for Gear Up Girl this weekend
Hundreds of women will take to two wheels this weekend for South Australia’s largest all female ride – Gear Up Girl SA.
“This ride is not just about women riding together, it’s also about women learning from each other,” explains Margaret Boylan, cycle coach and ambassador for the ride.
“There are many experienced riders who have encouraged their friends who don’t normally ride to give cycling a go and it’s doing a very important job in the wider community.”
Participants can choose from a River Ride (15km), Beach Ride (40km) or Harbour Ride (55km) as part of the event, with bubbles and cheese to celebrate at the finish.
Events such as Gear Up Girl SA are needed more than ever with the latest national cycling survey showing a 20% drop in cycling participation and less than 1 in 10 women reportedly riding a bicycle in the past week.
“We really need to improve our infrastructure to get more women cycling,” explains Christian Haag, Bike SA CEO Christian Haag says.
“Gear Up Girl SA has proven to be a great way to get more women riding. We make sure the route is carefully planned so that everyone feels safe and supported and the end of the day it’s a whole lot of fun for everyone involved.”
At the finish, gourmet food providers, Bottega Rotolo will be providing a free glass of bubbles as well as a selection of gourmet cheese so that riders can celebrate.
With a sunny weather forecast of 27 degrees, the first ride will start at 9am. Further information including how to register can be found at www.bikesa.asn.au/gearupgirl
